The gravest projected effects of the climate crisis for the UK have been mapped by experts, ranging from a scorching 4C jump in mean temperatures to a 6.5-foot surge in sea level. A separate possibility envisions a drop of 6C in temperatures following the failure of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset farming and energy needs.
Credible Events, Not Predictions
These impacts, certain ones are connected to critical climate thresholds, are considered as improbable but plausible. The team said that these scenarios filled a gap in risk assessment that had rendered the UK ill-prepared for extreme outcomes.
"The worst-case scenarios we have outlined aren’t predictions, but they are credible," commented the lead researcher who directed the study. "Britain has been planning lacking the methods to test against extreme possibilities. We've now provided decision-makers what they need to get ready for climate outcomes they hope never happen, but dare not dismiss."
A Range of Extreme Weather Possibilities
A further series of severe models maps the potential extent of harsh climate between now and the year 2100. These indicate that temperatures could skyrocket in some months by up to 6C above historical levels, while precipitation could be triple normal levels.
The likelihood of the worst-case outcomes coming to pass could not be calculated due to a lack of certainty about what measures will be implemented to combat climate change and how the Earth's systems will behave. This analysis was likened to defence planning or resilience checks for the banking sector.
Major Scenario Details
- Severe Heating: Worldwide averages rising well above 4C by 2100 could happen if emissions cuts fails or if strong feedback loops like the tropical forests dying release its enormous store of carbon. This would lead to intense and enduring heatwaves and dry spells hitting the UK in summer.
- Atlantic Current Collapse: A critical sea current, the North Atlantic current, is slowing down and showing signs of collapse due to climate change. A full shutdown beginning in 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Farming would struggle enormously and freshwater availability would be fundamentally reshaped," said the professor.
- Accelerated Coastal Flooding: A increase of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could occur if polar ice in Greenland and Antarctica disintegrate quickly, submerging low-lying areas. In contrast to the other scenarios, this possibility is already known by infrastructure experts.

The research was commissioned as part of a government’s adaptation planning initiative. Independent analyses have cautioned that insufficient focus was being given to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.
An independent advisory body has said that the UK must "become resilient to moderate heating" and assess the threats for four degrees. Past policy documents have been described as being "very weak" by environmental groups.
A national response noted: "Climate change is at the center of this government’s agenda, both preparing for impacts and establishing itself as a low-carbon economy. It is vital that the UK is ready for the impacts."
