The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to review the score on the pitchside monitor and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

This victory elevates the manager's team up to third in the Premier League, five points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of pitch

After a uninspiring weekday performance in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a only attempts on target, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an free the defender to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in the Argentine's absence - notched his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, partnering effectively with Kevin Danso as the pair handled superbly with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the gates after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's winning streak at home will not be a major concern for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had netted only a single goal between them before Sunday's outing.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a damp and dreary night on in Liverpool.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having room and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, as well, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of the home side's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered threatening balls into the Spurs box.

What next for both teams?

Everton: Moyes' men travel to Sunderland in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: Spurs travel to St James' Park on Wednesday, 29 October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against the Magpies.
